Darlings is a 2022 released dark comedy film directed by debutante Jasmeet K Reen, starring Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah and Vijay Varma in leading roles. The film showcases the domestic violence faced by Badru after her husband Hamza starts torturing her and pacifying it with an apology. Another similar film with domestic abuse and misogyny as its core theme released is the 2022 Malayalam flick Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey. The film stars Darshana Rajendran and Basil Joseph and is directed by Vipin Das. The film shows how Jaya faces a severe backlash of violence from her husband. As the film further moves ahead, Jaya takes matters into her hands realising her own worth! These two films have the same core theme and genre of treating the subject. Both the female leads do take a stand for themselves but the surrounding characters have a different take on domestic violence.

Jaya Jaya... has a scene where Jaya after extreme torture by her husband confronts her mother to share her trauma but instead gets lectured on how it is a woman’s fate and that it is very normal to get slapped by husbands!
On the other hand, Darlings has a progressive mother played by Shefali Shah supports her daughter right from the beginning of the suffering and till the end takes a stand for and with her. Not only Badru’s mother but Zulfi (played by Roshan Mathew), and the kasai (played by Rajesh Sharma) too lend their support every single time till the end.

Both the directors of these films deserve gallons of praise as they handle the delicate topic with extreme finesse and do not lose the dose of comedy to showcase abusive men at any point. Jaya surrounded by patriarchal characters and Badru surrounded by feminist characters has a clear win-win ending for both characters with a convincing and unexpected climax. Both sense the idea of self-respect and self-acceptance which makes you feel happy in the end and leaves you with a question of people’s mentality towards this niche subject.
What Badru, Shamshu and Jaya face in their marriage is very evident and prevails in society. But most of it is unheard of as people feel being in an abusive marriage is preferable as compared to living with a divorced tag! Also would give a special mention to the police officer (in Darlings) and the judge (in Jaya Jaya...) as they console their respective characters pretty well!
Darlings is available on Netflix whereas Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey is available on Disney Plus Hotstar in multiple dubbed languages.
