Decoding SLB's world- Gangubai Kathiawadi

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's filmography is a case study in itself. His keen speciality is from grandeur costumes to larger-than-life sets and epic music. One such is Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt as the titular character. 

The film that was released in 2022 had a re-release on account of its first anniversary. SLB's magic on screen was evident with the film being absolutely beautiful and resplendent in every aspect. Here's my quick analysis of why Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a film school himself.

DETAILED RESEARCH AND EXECUTION

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi is inspired by S. Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens Of Mumbai. The film showcases the life story of Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi who was sold to a brothel owner by her lover, and how she rose to become Gangubai Kothewali. Sanjay Leela Bhansali ensured that all facts were true and thus showed the actual Mumbai to us. Every scene has the essence of vintage Mumbai. Take a look below-

WIDE ANGLE & LONG SHOTS

Wide-angle shots have a distinct capability of showing a lot more and less at the same time. These shots have well versed for showing the city or a kingdom. But SLB's Gangubai has instances wherein emotions too were portrayed with utmost clarity. Another unusual thing in which SLB aces is long shots. The best example is the crescendo of Dholida's song. The way the scene of conceptualised, executed and shot is very rare and beautiful too. 

RUSTIC AND GRAND MUSIC

This is SLB's mastery. Every film of his has music that shows the rustic and rawness of the culture. Gangubai Kathiawadi aces the music and every song complements the emotions of the film. From Jhume re Gori showing the fun side of young Ganga to Jab Saiyaan showcasing the romantic yet playful side of Gangu. Shikayat showcases the heartbreak when Gangubai leaves her love and Dholida is the fierce and strong Gangu. Muskurahat is so soothing to hear at the end.

SOOTHING COSTUMES

The film follows a beautiful palette of whites for Gangubai. From the dark colours during her Ganga days to switching to whites (Hans wala safed). The USP of intricate yet simplistic shades of white makes Gangubai look and age better with every scene.

All in all, Gangubai Kathiawadi is Alia Bhatt's strongest performance till date along with some amazing roles played by Shantanu Maheshwari, Ajay Devgn, Vijay Raaz and Seema Pahwa. You can catch the film on Netflix or if you're lucky like me, please do watch this movie in theatre.
