KANTARA: A Case Study For Filmmakers.
Kantara (2022) is a Kannada language film written, directed and starring Rishabh Shetty as the lead is a commercial entertainer with lots of action, comedy and drama but with the tadka of folklore and traditions of Karnataka.
Set in the 1990s world (with a few scenes from the past as well), it carries the essence of Mangalorean culture very well. Well, there are so many films, especially in the last 4 years have been popularized due to their core motive of striving culture as their main theme, Kantara sets itself ahead of the race to be remembered amongst the people for many years and sets itself as a case study for both- the filmmakers and the cine-goers.
Kantara is a dandakathe (a legendary story) which has a very mysterious and unpredictable storyline but Rishabh Shetty aces to manage all of it easily. With an amazing story and beautiful execution with his impeccable performance, both as a director and actor, he takes the film to a world-class level. The emotional quotient of the film is also something that has to be addressed without fail.
Apart from the performances what stands out for me is the strong research done before executing this film for the big screen. As the film is set in three different timelines, not much information was available in the books. So, the makers decided to take the help of people from Keradi (where the film was shot). The costumes too were a daunting task as the makers got to know that the colour of the uniforms of the police was changed each year and the badges were customized.
The portrayal of Panjurli daiva is so compelling, colourful and yet so powerful. Rishabh made sure to not miss any mark as it could have shattered the captivating quotient of the audience. The music along with the background score by Ajaneesh Loknath elevates this film to another level.
Films like these motivate the new generation to know more about culture. Rishabh’s film as a whole made the whole nation in fact the whole globe dig deep into the vast culture of Karnataka.
The film is a true-blue cinematic experience for everyone and if you haven’t watched this stellar masterpiece; you can watch this anytime on Netflix (Hindi) and Amazon Prime Video (Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil). It is also said that an English dubbed version too will be released in January 2023 for global audiences.
