Crime Thriller designs, themes, templates and downloadable graphic elements on Dribbble

Crime thrillers are tough to make. Either you bore the audience while building the premise or entice the audience. Even the audience plays a crucial factor here. Some love fast-paced screenplay and some look for more details and storylines. Nonetheless, the Indian film industry's success in making good crime thrillers is a glass half-full. With some knit-gritting fiction to most of them adapting or seeking inspiration from real-life incidents, our industry has found its way in building a stronghold in this genre.

Here's my list of some of the best crime thriller movies and documentaries-series you should not miss!

Dahaad

Director Reema Kagti on how Dahaad came to be, her creative inspiration, and more

The recently released Amazon Prime's Dahaad is an eight-episode series that takes you through the gruesome story of 27 women disappearing without a trace and being found dead in one manner. As the case unfolds, every character's flaws too come out. Interestingly, this series not only covers the dark side of a psychopathic criminal but also unfolds the problems of our society like casteism, gender inequality and dowry without making it too obvious or irrelevant to the plot. The show is more or less inspired by the life of Cyanide Mohan Kumar.

Packed with powerful performances of Sonakshi Sinha, Gulshan Devaiah, Vijay Varma and Sohum Shah; this series takes a little time to build the plot but also keeps you at the edge of the seat till the climax. Directed by Reema Kagti and Ruchika Oberoi and produced by Excel Entertainment; this one is a sure shot one of the best crime thriller from Bollywood. Also, it's refreshing to see Sonakshi Sinha back in action after some dud performances in Dabbang 3, Khandani Shafakhana and more!

Dancing On The Grave

Dancing on the Grave Web Series (2023) | Release Date, Review, Cast, Trailer, Watch Online at Amazon Prime Video - Gadgets 360

Another crime docuseries streaming on Amazon Prime based on the life of Shakeereh Khaleeli is a winner. The story covers the decades-old murder case of the rich heiress of Bengaluru Shakeereh Khaleeli who was buried alive by her second husband Murali Manohar Mishra aka Swami Shraddhananda.

The series starts from the story of Khaleeli's first marriage to her divorce and second marriage with Mishra and follows with how he murdered her just for her wealth & property.

Although the series isn't the best, it holds a significant mark as it was the first case in Indian Judicial history where DNA testing was used and the exhumation process was also taped.

The Talwars- Behind The Closed Doors

The Talwars - Behind Closed Doors - Disney+ Hotstar

The 2008 Noida Murder Case of Aarushi Talwar is a mystery in itself. The case that is still unsolved, covers the gruesome murder of Aarushi and Hemraj Banjade, the domestic help of the Talwar family. Initially, after Aarushi's murder, Hemraj goes missing and becomes the prime suspect. However the next day, police found his body which leads to putting the Talwar couple Dr. Rajesh and Dr. Nupur as prime suspects.

The story is retold in the movie, starting with the murder discovery and following the initial mistakes made by the local police, the hasty transfer of the case to India's CBI, the use of questionable interrogation methods, the sensational criminal trial, and the numerous legal appeals.

Multiple shows and films have been made; the most popular being Talvar- directed by Meghna Gulzar and starring Irrfan Khan and Konkan Sen Sharma.

The docuseries is available on Disney + Hotstar.

No One Killed Jessica - Wikipedia

No One Killed Jessica is a 2011 crime thriller inspired by the real life of Jessica Lal who was shot by Manu Sharma.

Jessica Lal, a model and a bartender refused to serve drinks to Manu Sharma as the bar had some protocols following which Manu shot her which led to her death.

The film starring Vidya Balan as Sabrina (Jessica's sister) and Rani Mukherjee as Meera Gaity, a journalist showcases the harshness and gruesomeness of political power and fear from the politicians amongst the people of the capital city of the country.

With powerful performances from both Balan and Mukherjee, this is one of the most critically acclaimed female-led films of the early 2010s.

The film is streaming on Netflix.

House Of Secrets- The Burari Deaths

House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths (TV Mini Series 2021) - IMDb

The Netflix docuseries House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths premiered in 2021. The three-part series, created by Leena Yadav and Anubhav Chopra, investigates the theories surrounding the deaths of 11 Chundawat/Bhatia family members on June 30, 2018.

The show is so well crafted that it covers all the possible angles of this case with the utmost sensitivity and yet leaves a question at the end of how one person in the family influenced the other ten to hang themselves along with him. It also sheds light on the psychological, political and social aspects of the deceased along with how it impacted the journalists, police officers and investigators who were involved in the case.

One of the best crime series India has ever made, this one is a must-watch but at your own risk!

Chup - The Revenge Of An Artist

Chup (2022) - IMDb

Heard of paid critic reviews? What happens if a man is ready to hunt down every paid critic for helping a horrendous film to run successfully! Sounds crazy right? That is Chup- Revenge of an artist. Dulquer Salmaan a boutique owner plays the role of an antagonist who hunts every paid reviewer and stabs the number of star ratings they gave for the film on their head. With the excellent cast of Sunny Deol, Shreya Dhanwantary and Pooja Bhatt; the film also has several references of director Guru Dutt's heavily panned last film Kaagaz Ke Phool. With multiple twists and violent visuals; this film is a must-watch.

It is currently streaming on Zee5.

Talaash

Another great suspense thriller by Reema Kagti and Excel Entertainment starring Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor along with a stellar supporting cast of actors like Rajkumar Rao and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. The film continues to keep the secrets and lies till the end. I bet the climax will definitely shock you!

This spine-chilling thriller is currently streaming on Netflix.

That's all for this time! Wait is your favourite thriller not a part of this list? Maybe there is another list of thrillers too. Stay tuned.
