The Death Of Rom-Coms. Jab We Met Returns, etc !

Best Bollywood romantic films for Valentine's Day - The Statesman

Either you love rom-coms or not, there is no middle ground to it. In the past the tried and tested rom-coms have worked only because of the actors or the great music. Otherwise, people have moved on from the rom-com genre.

Despite his ‘sufi’-ness in his films, Imtiaz Ali hasn't offered a good romcom in the past 6 years. Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017) and Love Aaj Kal (2020) both failed miserably despite the lead actor’s impeccable chemistry. The same goes for Karan Johar. His romcoms have the same tried and tested formula that has worked so far but will it work again with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, only time will tell.

Luv Ranjan is the only director who has patented to give classic rom-coms. With the Pyaar Ka Punchnama series, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety or his next with Ranbir and Shraddha Kapoor Tu Jhoothi Mein Makkar, every film has the same formula (two mischievous loggerhead lovers) but yet has that one distinct quality which is the treatment of the characters. The vividness and boldness of the characters and Pritam-Arijit’s music works every time for his films. With TJMM being one of the anticipated films of this year, let's see how it works at the box office.

Imtiaz Ali’s iconic Jab We Met is back in theatres for Valentine’s day week. The film which was released in 2007 still saw a flock of audiences back again to reminisce and enjoy their favourite film. Jab We Met was released in selected theatres across Mumbai and other cities. The songs of the film are still in the minds of the audience.

Not only Jab We Met, DDLJ too was released back in theatres (although it still runs in Maratha Mandir since its release). People have been choosing to watch these films over Shehzada. This only proves that if well-written and with some great musical treatment, romcoms can still work efficiently.

With Anurag Basu's Metro In Dino (sequel to Life In A Metro), Satya Prem Ki Katha, and Dreamgirl 2 being released this year, let's see whether rom-coms are still a choice for filmmakers to explore or not.
