Male Gazing- Beshraram Rang, Ghungroo, Oo Antava...etc.

 

Pathan is scheduled to release this coming Friday. But the controversy around it never ends. One such controversy is on the song Besharam Rang featuring Deepika Padukone and Shahrukh Khan. Few political parties and netizens found the song to be vulgar and objectifying the female lead. Well, the song sung by Shilpa Rao and composed by Vishal Shekhar and has over 200 million views on the YouTube channel of YRF (Yashraj Developers) has been criticized for promoting male gazing, here's my analysis on male gazing and the portrayal of women in the songs of Indian films.

Besharam Rang, according to me when it comes to music has a mediocre composition but it hardly objectifies women. Wearing a bikini in a foreign clad doesn’t make it any vulgar. The song, if carefully noticed has long and pan shots of Deepika in a bikini. Whereas another Siddharth Anand directorial blockbuster film War (2019) definitely had some objectification. Ghungroo song being far superior in terms of composition to Besharam Rang, had shots which objectified Vaani Kapoor.  The song started with the projection of Vaani Kapoor’s legs and further showed her body.

Not only in Bollywood but the Telugu flick Pushpa too had a similar scene.  Samantha Ruth Prabhu's biggest hit song Oo Antava… too had bold lyrics but were completely contradictory to how the song was filmed. The song used as an item number garnered over 270 million views on YouTube.

Coming back to Besharam Rang,  one of the most beautiful things that I noticed is how Shahrukh Khan gazes at Deepika. Had it been anyone who would have done that, would have gotten into very deep trouble. The respectful ‘aadab’ was to die for! While other than any political agenda, Pathan’s song is very good definitely we expect way better from Vishal-Shekhar but other than that the song, the lead actor’s chemistry and their looks are apt!

Male gazing or diminishing women is not something that any movie preaches but let's not forget how to behave or treat a woman!

Decoding SLB's world- Gangubai Kathiawadi

Official Poster of Gangubai Kathiawadi. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's filmography is a case study in itself. His keen speciality is from grandeur costumes to larger-than-life sets and epic music.
