THE ROMANTICS- Yash Chopra and his legacy...

Yash Chopra Documentary Series 'The Romantics' Set at Netflix - Variety

Netflix's newest offering 'The Romantics' is a documentary that pays tribute to the legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra ji and his legacy in the Hindi film Industry. The four-episode documentary series covers the lesser-known facts and the downfall and rise of YRF (Yashraj Films).

The show interviews the biggest of industry stars, including SRK, Amitabh Bachchan, Bhumi Pednekar, Rani Mukherjee, Anushka Sharma, and more. It also has a sneak peek of Aditya Chopra (probably his first official interview).

The series starts with the rise of B.R. Chopra (Yash Chopra's brother) and his films with Yashraj ji's career taking a leap. The debut of Yashraj ji and all his films speak about his love for the art of filmmaking and creating new cinema every time. His first film Dhool Ka Phool released in 1959 was a melodrama of illegitimacy. He was known to bring all the A-stars in one film- Waqt (1965). Since then he continued to give gems like Deewar, Chandni, Lamhe, Darr and so on... These films worked at the box office and made the leading actors into superstars.

The series then simultaneously moves on to Yash ji's son Aditya Chopra's filmography. The sense style of his filmmaking is very different to Yash ji. While Yash ji focused on bringing family drama and actresses in chiffon sarees, Aditya Chopra blended western culture with Indianness to it. The generational shift of YRF started from Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. This film did wonders for everyone. It put the Indian film industry to the globe with its classic storyline and evergreen songs. The film fetched Aditya Chopra his best directorial award post which he never made an official public appearance. His interview in this series makes me wonder why has he never given an interview earlier. His intelligence and maturity along with his clarity towards his scripts, films and filmmaking are extraordinary. Aditya Chopra continues his winning streak with Mohabbatein which launched six newcomers (one of them was Uday Chopra, Yash Chopra's second son) and starred Aishwarya Rai, Shahrukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. His few ventures after this didn't work well but then later on with Veer-Zaara, Hum Tum and Dhoom; it changed the fate of YRF.

The Romantics' Recap And Review: A Nostalgic Trip Down The Hindi Film Industry Lane | Film Fugitives

YRF didn't stop there. They invested in creating a studio as Hollywood studios came into the picture to co-produce films here in India. Not only this, they thought of bringing up more talents with creative directors like Maneesh Sharma (director of Band Baaja Baarat), actors like Anushka Sharma, Ranveer Singh, Bhumi Pednekar and so on.

The show covers a span of over 50 years of legacy and what they are looking forward to achieving in upcoming years. Everything makes you go for the nostalgic ride of Bollywood.

The Romantics directed by Smriti Mundhra is available on Netflix. Do catch to know some amazing information about Bollywood and its gem YASH CHOPRA ji.
